Heritage: the traditions, achievements, beliefs that are part of the history of a group.
God cares about heritage. He cares about the next generation. God cares that His Words and His promises live on in each generation. The covenant between God and Abraham is an excellent example of heritage. In Genesis 18:19, God is speaking and says about Abraham:
"For I have known (chosen, acknowledged) him as my own,
so that he may teach and command his children and the sons of his house after him
to keep the way of the Lord and to do judgement (what is just and righteous)."
Why did God choose Abraham? Because he was handsome? Skilled? Political? Rich? No. He made a covenant with Abraham because Abraham would teach the ways of the Lord to his descendants after him.
Heritage is so important to God that He changed Abram's name to Abraham, "Father of Many Nations." This name depicts more than just natural sons. It speaks of a spiritual legacy.
Legacy is still God's desire! Whether you're a parent or a children's pastor. Whether you're in the nursery or youth group. God is interested in parternering with you so that His ways will be taught to future generations! Your job is priceless and YOU ARE VALUABLE!
