I hope you all had a glorious Resurrection Day last weekend! As we were driving home from church I said to my husband, "You know, Jesus said it is better if He goes because then the Helper will come. Something better is coming!" That's what we celebrate 50 days after Easter, Pentecost!
After Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared to His followers. He talked with them about the kingdom of God. He ate with them and they enjoyed each others’ company. He told them to wait in Jerusalem for what the Father had promised. What was the promise? The Holy Spirit was the promise! Jesus said, “John baptized with water, but not many days from now you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” He told them the Holy Spirit would give them power and they would be His witnesses. Then Jesus was caught up and a cloud carried Him out of their sight!
The disciples returned to Jerusalem, gathered in an upper room and devoted themselves to pray while they waited. Some of Jesus’ brothers were there and His mother, Mary, as well. The day came! There was the sound of a rushing wind and everyone heard it! Then tongues that looked like fire settled on top of every person. All the followers were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other (different, foreign) languages or tongues, as the Spirit prompted them. Outsiders heard these followers of Jesus speaking to them in their native tongues! The followers of Jesus were telling them of the mighty works of God! Peter explained that this gift of the Holy Spirit was from God and is for everyone who would accept Him. 3000 people accepted the message that day and were baptized! The apostles performed many signs and miracles after this and more people got saved every single day!
